Christian Spiritual Direction

So, you might be wondering,
"what is Christian spiritual direction, exactly?"
That's a really good question! Spiritual direction in some form or another has been part of the Christian tradition for thousands of years.

Simply put, I help fellow Christians pay attention to God’s presence and activity in their life. I help them notice their own reactions and responses, and I assist them in responding authentically to God. I do this by providing space and time for spiritual conversation and reflection, by listening deeply and asking questions, and by offering tools and contemplative practices to assist them.

The focus of direction is not on ideas or thoughts about God but rather on experiences of God. Other relationships with spiritual leaders, such as pastors and mentors, might focus on increasing theological knowledge, problem solving, or ethics. A spiritual director's focus is on God's personal presence and communication.

The ultimate goal in direction is to deepen one's relationship with God, and live out one's calling as a follower of Christ.
Why does someone do spiritual direction?
How do you know if spiritual direction is right for you?
There's no hard and fast answer. But in my experience, Christian spiritual direction is particularly helpful if:

You want to explore your personal relationship with God in a deeper, more experiential way

You are curious about different kinds of prayer practices

You are experiencing a period of dryness or disappointment in your relationship with God

I also find that direction is usually most fruitful with people who have been on the Christian journey for some time, and who already have (or desire to have) a regular prayer time or devotional time with God. If you are newer to the faith, a mentoring, pastoring or small group relationship may be a better fit for you. But there are always exceptions to the rule! Feel free to contact me if you're not sure.
Logistically, how does direction work?
The logistics of direction with me are pretty straightforward: every meeting takes place over video chat, one-on-one and confidential. A session lasts for about an hour, usually once a month. I offer a sliding scale for payment to match your financial circumstances.
